English courses

In order to provide a comprehensive English syllabus we’ve teamed up with home educator and experienced English distance tutor, Catherine Mooney.

Catherine has her own site, so we’ve provided some summary information below and then you can connect through to her site to purchase. We highly recommend you try her courses if you’re looking for an English IGCSE or Key Stage 3 programme.

She offers both English Language and English Literature IGCSE courses, as well as an Essay Writing course to help students plan and write effective essays.

Additionally she offers a Pre-GCSE (Key Stage 3) English course

IGCSE ENGLISH LANGUAGE COURSE

For the IGCSE English Language course you can choose between three exam specifications: Edexcel Spec A, Edexcel Spec B and CIE (Cambridge). The specifications are all very similar to each other, but there are some differences and this may make one specification a better choice for your child. You can choose any specification you wish and there are further details about the differences on my website (please contact me if you are unsure about which specification would be best for your child).

All specifications cover approximately the same content, and this includes:

  • How to write to imagine and entertain
  • How to write to describe and explore
  • How to write to argue, persuade and advise
  • How to write in different genres and for different purposes
  • How fiction and non-fiction writers create their effects
  • How to read for meaning and respond to ‘comprehension’ style questions
  • How to respond to longer essay questions in the exam
  • How to plan and write a timed exam answer

The course consists of 10 – 11 chapters (depending on the specification), which cover all the reading and writing tasks you will need for the exam. You will be given plenty of practical guidance, together with short exercises to test your learning, and you’ll learn all about exam technique. There are 10 – 11 tutor-marked assignments, including a mock exam, and the option for extra past paper practice. As with all my courses there is unlimited (within reason!) phone and email support.

In addition to an attractive and engaging full colour course book, complete with audio CDs, you will receive a comprehensive range of e-materials to support your study, including a fully annotated version of the anthology (for the Edexcel course) and a link to an exam centre wiki.

You can find further details about the course content here:

IGCSE ENGLISH LITERATURE COURSE

The IGCSE English Literature course covers the content for Edexcel’s English Literature IGCSE (4ET0). The course has been written in the same friendly and approachable style as my other courses, and builds on the skills taught in the English Language course. For this reason many students like to study the two courses together, although this isn’t a necessity. The course will not only prepare you for the exam, but will also give you a secure grounding in the study of English Literature and help with essay writing skills.

The course consists of 4 units, which cover each text that needs to be studied for the exam, together with exam and revision practice:

  1. 1. Prose: Pride and Prejudice
  2. Poetry: The Edexcel Poetry Anthology (I have produced an annotated version of this anthology which is included in the course)
  3. Drama: The Importance of Being Earnest
  4. Revision and Exam preparation

There are 10 tutor-marked assignments, including a mock exam, together with practice exercises to help consolidate what you have learned. As usual, there is unlimited phone and email support.

Course costs
The course costs £285, which includes the course book, the annotated anthology and all e-materials, together with tutor-marked assignments and email/phone support. I have produced a fully annotated version of Pride and Prejudice especially for the course. This will not only make the text more accessible and enjoyable but will also act as a study guide. The cost of this book is £15. In addition to this text you will need to purchase:

  • The Importance of Being Earnest, Oscar Wilde (Penguin Classics is a good edition)
  • Pride and Prejudice, BBC 1995, DVD
  • The Importance of Being Earnest, DVD, 2002 (with Rupert Everett and Colin Firth)

 Discounts
There is a sibling discount if you use the same course materials and I am happy to mark assignments and mock exams as well as providing email and phone support for £160.

If you are also purchasing the English Language course there is a further discount of £20.

IGCSE ESSAY WRITING COURSE

Essay Writing is a colourful and engaging course, which has been produced exclusively for home-educators. It shows you everything you need to know to be able to write cracking essays on most topics. No prior knowledge is assumed about essay writing, and you are taken from the basics of sentence and paragraph structure, through to how to plan and write effective essays.

A range of typical essay styles are covered in the course, such as compare and contrast, analyse and explore and argue and discuss, together with plenty of practical exercises and detailed tutor feedback. You’ll learn about essay presentation, too, and there’s a section on how to write essays for exams. You’ll be shown how to write references (which is important if you’re going on to study at college) and there are seven tutor-marked assignments, together with phone and email support.

To an extent the course can be tailored to your needs and special requirements can be accommodated (such as learning to work with a scribe, for example). Please phone me to discuss your child’s special requirements and I shall do my very best to accommodate them.

Course costs
The course costs £140, which includes the course book together with tutor-marked assignments and unlimited phone and email support.

THE PRE-IGCSE COURSE (KEY STAGE 3)

The Pre-IGCSE English Language course has been created for students who are aged between 11 and 13 (so eligible to start the IGCSE English Language course) but who feel they need a bit more preparation and ‘brushing up of the basics’ before embarking on an exam course. It gently orientates students towards the sort of reading and writing tasks that they will eventually undertake on the IGCSE English Language course.

As with my other courses, the Pre-IGCSE English Language course does not assume any prior knowledge (other than a reasonable ability to read and write). It covers fundamental English skills in an age-appropriate way (including sentences, paragraphs and punctuation) while introducing the different genres and styles of writing that will be encountered in the IGCSE English Language course, including essay writing. Learning to ‘read for meaning’ (a core IGCSE level skill) is also taught.

The course consists of a colourful and user-friendly course book, with lots of helpful exercises, together with 10 tutor-marked assignments for which full feedback is provided. There is unlimited (within reason!) phone and email support. One useful aspect of this course is that help acclimatise both parent and child to studying alongside a distance-learning tutor.  It is also helpful for students who don’t yet want the full commitment of an exam-orientated course, but want to improve and/or maintain their skills. Students who perhaps lack the maturity to begin the full IGCSE course, will also benefit from the pre-IGCSE English Language course.

To an extent the course can be tailored to your needs and special requirements can be accommodated (such as learning to work with a scribe, for example). Please phone me to discuss your child’s special requirements and I shall do my very best to accommodate them.

Course costs
The course costs £160, which includes the course book together with tutor-marked assignments and email/phone support.
