How to find an exam centre to take my exams
- Please note with everything that happened with exams last summer due to Covid and exam cancellations MANY schools and small exam centres are no longer accepting private candidates (this may change in the future again) Also we recommend that you register for the exams as soon as possible to ensure a place and do check with the exam centre that they have procedures in place to help to give centre assessed grades IF the exams were to be cancelled again. As yet OFQUAL have not published what their criteria will be for giving these grades if the need arises.
It is best to try to register with an exam centre around six months before the exams are due. It is possible to enter much later, even up to a week before the exam, but exam board fees rise sharply for late entries, and you risk not being able to find a convenient exam centre. The fee you will have to pay comprises the exam board entry fee (currently about £28.50 for GCSEs and £38.50 for Edexcel IGCSEs, £48 for CIE IGCSEs for 2015 ) plus an administration fee for the exam centre, to reimburse them for the inconvenience. The admin fee varies hugely, from around £25 at some centres to over £150 at others.
Due to the number of schools etc no longer accepting private candiadtes we have decided to temporarily remove our list of exam centres who have previously accepted students, The list is shrinking daily! The home ed wiki page has a similar list of exam centres taht were able to help last summer. You can find it here https://he-exams.wikia.org/wiki/Finding_an_exam_centre You are very welcome to trying phoning your local centres to ask if they are able to help.
We have left here the information for two big exam centres who we know have been able to help our students with predicted grades and are working hard to ensure that they will be able to again if the need arises.
Exam centres are under no obligation to accept private candidates; it creates extra work for them and may involve some disruption to their schedule or difficulties for the school. They are entitled to charge an admin fee which compensates for this to some degree, and that fee varies hugely – from £15 per subject at some schools to over £150 at others.
