Key Stage 3 Science

Our new, rewritten, Key Stage 3 Science Course consists of  94 lessons split over the three sciences: Biology, Chemistry and Physics

We have squeezed even more practical examples and experiments into it and yet we have dropped the price by £130 to just £150 to make it more affordable for other home educating families.

It covers all of the material in the National Curriculum for Key Stage 3 and, in school, would be covered over a period of three years from age 11-14 years.

We love teaching science and helping other families to fall in love with it too. As home educators, and qualified teachers, with a background in science, we believe that science should be as practical and as fun as possible.

It helps children develop key life skills and understand the world around them. It gives them opportunities to observe, predict, apply knowledge, communicate, plan and interpret.

It helps them to be more aware of what they see happening around them. We hope that our students will take the opportunities we have provided to try things out, to experiment and to have a go. This will all support their intellectual development and their learning of the science theory too.

Over the many years that we have been home educating our own children, we have met many other families who all tackle science learning in very different ways. There is no ‘one size fits all approach’ and we hope that this course allows families to apply it in whichever way best suits them. Some students work best by themselves – working through the textbook and the experiments, others like to be involved in the lessons with their parents too and others (like us!) have younger siblings who like to get involved at every opportunity! All of these are fabulous ways to learn science.

Some of our students have covered lots of science up to this point, others have dipped in and out of scientific ideas and others have not covered much at all. Our Key Stage 3 course allows each student to work through the national curriculum material which is built upon later at IGCSE level. We have found, with our own children and many others, that this course gives them a firm foundation of learning and understanding upon which to build later knowledge before sitting their exams.

It has been written for everyone – whether you have a science background or not – the course walks you through all the topics that school children would take 3 school years to cover but we have found, actually takes a lot less time to cover in the home.

Some families like to race through it whilst others take many years to cover the contents perhaps twice before moving on. The choice is yours.

We have kept the three sciences separate in the course to help students to decide which IGCSE sciences they might like to take by being able to identify the different subjects easily.

Once you have purchased this course, you are welcome to use it as many times as you need to within your own family but we respectfully ask you please not to lend/forward/copy the course for other families or groups.

The accompanying textbook covers all the theory you need to learn and the course material gives you lots of practical, hands-on, experiences. You will need to buy it separately and read the accompanying pages as part of the lessons. The older verison of the course book, with a different front cover, has the same content and page numbers etc. We have second hand copies available if you have trouble sourcing it.

You can buy all the equipment kits suggested, however, if that does not suit you, we have tried, where possible, to include YouTube demonstrations of experiments to allow your child to see them in action. Or you could mix and match- do some practical work and some watching the videos.

As much as possible the resources are things you would have around the house e.g. balloons and elastic bands and straws. We have included lots of videos and practical work to keep the learning real and fun. Science is exciting and that is reflected in the course material.

You can do a lesson a week or one a month or whizz through it by covering lots of lessons each week.  It is totally up to you. We have included answers to the end of topic tests and there are answers to questions posed within the course material. These too are available to be used as best suits you and your child and their learning style – you can set them as a ‘test’ for your child to work through alone or as a fun verbal quiz or as a consolidation exercise, working through them together using the book to help you.

Each lesson also includes a list of the key terms and spellings that your child should become familiar with. As much as possible they should accurately learn how to spell these science words.

We wanted to write a course to share with you all the ideas we have used with our own children over the years. Each lesson has a list of suggested resources at the beginning – these are only ‘suggested’ as all the academic material to learn the information is in the textbook but it is a really good idea wherever possible for children to perform practical work to help consolidate their learning. I suggest you look ahead at the start of each topic to see what equipment you may need – this may be simple supermarket purchases or more ‘scientific’ equipment. Any equipment you purchase now will support further work at IGCSE. We have included a list of resources we have sourced from Kitchen Chemistry (a small, husband and wife company) but you are welcome to pick and choose from that list and resource your own equipment but we have tried to simplify this task for you.
